"Nanotechnology refers to any application of science that deals with elements between 100 nanometres and a tenth of a nanometer in size, in which size is critical to the application's ultimate purpose" source: Lux Capital Report 2002.

pSivida, through its nano-structured BioSilicon™ technology, is developing nanotechnology products.

The Company is participating in new markets that are viewed by governments and corporate enterprises alike as extremely important and capable of providing significant economic benefits.

BioSilicon™ is an example of top-down nanostructuring whereby the element of silicon is nano structured to create nano-pores within the material. These pores are typically about 10 atoms across and can be loaded with drug, peptides, genes, proteins, radionuclides and other therapeutics or vaccines.

BioSilicon™ products and related intellectual property will be developed in collaboration with Australian and international universities and teaching hospitals, partly funded through government grant initiatives such as the US National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI).

An example of such a corporate alliance is the collaboration between pSiMedica and the prestigious Purdue University based in Indiana USA, which has formed a centre for nanotechnology excellence.
